Caves

13,000 square feet of man-made cave space serves not only as a dramatic showplace for our wines, but provides precise regulation of temperature and humidity for aging each barrel and bottle. Too many factors can adversely affect a wine during the aging process--the wines' formative years, so to speak. The extreme care taken to keep our caves in optimal condition, both in terms of temperature regulation, and overall cleanliness, allow us to ensure that the these years are of pure benefit to the wine without the risk of exposure to elements which might be harmful to aroma and flavor.

The cave configuration consists of three distinct tunnels. The north and south tunnels converge at the Vineyard 29 Events Room, a point reaching 125 feet back into the Mayacamas mountains. Another 25 feet further into the mountainside lies the Wine Library, 75 feet directly beneath the sauvignon blanc vineyard behind the facility. This particular tunnel configuration, a giant arch with one main artery, allows individual portions of the tunnel system to be designated for use by our custom crush clients. Thus, each tunnel section serves as its own distinct cave space, allowing our custom crush clients the flexibility to treat their wines as they wish, and allowing Vineyard 29 to carry on the labor intensive processes it employs in carefully aging each barrel.

Humidity is maintained at a constant 65% by air condensers tucked away in a corner of the north tunnel. These condensers also allow for clean air recycling and temperature maintenance by drawing cool air into the cave at night from the sauvignon blanc vineyard directly above the library.

An immaculately maintained blend of function and aesthetics, a walk through the Vineyard 29 caves may be as much a soothing experience for humans as it is for the wines, as overhead lighting and music follow sensor-detected movement from tunnel to tunnel.
